Financial District, San Francisco: With so much unrest in our lives these
days, there is little wonder that people will be turning to more
spiritually-oriented topics when addressing New Year's resolutions.This
being the last night that the Transamerica Pyramid light will be illuminated
for the holiday season, there will be many people gathered throughout the
City to meditate on it and send good thoughts into the universe for peace.
The light is referred to as the "Crown Jewel" and has become a holiday
fixture since it was put in place six years ago. The installer of that
special light, Bill Bell of Novato, and his author wife, Andrea, will be
among the many praying, but for them the holiday light has meaning far
beyond traditional celebrations. It's a reminder of their faith and their
belief that beauty can be built out of tragedy.
As their 27-year-old son, Dawson Bell, struggled for his life in a San
Francisco hospital awaiting a heart transplant, he told his mother not to
worry because, "There is this great light that comes down ... and it will
all be perfect."
Dawson spoke words far wiser than anyone could have imagined, for just
shortly thereafter his father got the assignment to install that magnificent
light that shines atop the Transamerica Pyramid Building. It was the first
time ever for this kind of installation in the City.
Dawson Bell believed that what he learned about life and beyond through
his experience was something that others could benefit from, and so he hoped
someday as many people as possible would know about it. To make his wish
come true, Andrea Bell has written a book about his experience entitled
Dawson's Gift. It is available at bookstores and through a web site at
www.dawsonsgift.com.
The Transamerica Pyramid is located in the Financial District of San
Francisco. The holiday light is lit from Thanksgiving until New Year's Day,
and is visible from as far away as Marin, the East Bay and the Peninsula.
